Engineering Institutes / Schools
/ Colleges in Ireland
Ireland is the largest exporter of
software in the world and rates amongst the top five producers
of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals globally. The
ever-increasing demands of this high technology economy have
ensured that our higher education technological sector offers
the highest and most advanced standards and opportunities
available today.
The Department of Education and Science has overall
responsibility for this sector including the formulation and
review of policy.
There are 14 institutes of technology located throughout the
Republic offering programmes at masters, bachelor, and higher
certificate levels in a wide variety of subjects . Many also run
postgraduate and degree programmes, both taught and by research.
Most have schools of Science, Engineering & Technology and
Business. In addition some institutes have developed special
programmes in areas such as Humanities & Languages, Paramedical
Studies and Healthcare, Art & Design, and Tourism.
Programmes
in all these institutions (with the exception of DIT which
validates its own programmes) are validated by the Higher
Education and Training Award Council (HETAC) .HETAC was
established by the Government in June 2001, under the
Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999. HETAC awards
qualifications and sets and monitors standards at all levels of
higher education and training up to PhD level. The
qualifications awarded by this body are internationally
recognised by academic, professional, trade and craft bodies. In
addition most colleges also have courses leading directly to the
examinations of the many professional institutes.
Dublin Institute of Technology(DIT)
Under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992, six
existing third-level colleges were brought together to form
the DIT. It is the largest third level institute in Ireland
and until 1997 was the only designated Institute of
Technology in Ireland. As with the universities, it has the
statutory authority to award its own degrees at all levels.
